Conservation Area

Our conservation area was designated in 1976 and covers an area of approximately 29.8 ha (71 acres) it extends to include much of the medieval heart of the settlement focussing on Holy Trinity Church (Grade 2 listed) neighbouring Almshouses and the principle roads through the village, High Street, North Street, South Street, Beveridge Street and Church Street. It includes a large sweep of land to take in the stretch of the Grand Union Canal from Mill Lane to Barrow deep lock. The Area contains a broad range of residential and commercial development that is representative of settlement from the medieval period through to the Victorian and Edwardian expansion of the village in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Area also contains residential development alongside the canal up to the present.

It is essential that the proper procedure is followed when undertaking any work to any property contained within the conservation area, this includes trees which could carry a "Tree Preservation Order".
